When the channel TLC was featuring one of the pageants in the popular reality TV show “Toddlers and Tiaras,” one family stood out amongst the rest. Alana Thompson, better known as Honey Boo Boo was not considered as refined as the rest of the contestants which worked to their advantage in this case as they got their own spin-off with, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”
Although completely panned by critics who found Honey Boo Boo, her three sisters, step-father, and matriarch June Shannon aka Mama June to be offensive, outrageous, and a caricature of people from the south. One thing that was clear in every episode was Mama June’s love for her family and their crazy home life.
The family’s show was cancelled two years ago after Mama June was romantically linked to a convicted sex offender. The family has continued living in Georgia. In the last couple of months, Mama June has left everyone in shock and it’s not for her tumultuous life.
Honey Boo Boo and her family were part of the reality TV show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”
Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon, Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, and Anna “Chickadee” Shannon, Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, and Mama June were one of TLC’s highest rated shows.
The show was a complete contrast from “Toddlers and Tiaras,” where Honey Boo Boo was one of the contestants in the beauty pageant competitions.
Both shows have been criticized for child exploitation. To get ready for the beauty pageants, Mama June created a concoction for her daughter she dubbed “Go Go Juice,” a mix of Mountain Dew and Red Bull.
Last year, Alana went on TV with her mom because she had gained too much weight.
Doctors went to the family’s home to help them choose healthier eating habits.
Honey Boo Boo was expected to lose 12 to 25 pounds by the spring of 2015.
Mama June prided herself in feeding her family on $80 per week budget which included using coupons as well as feeding off roadkills.
Mama June has kept working on TV even after the family’s reality show was cancelled.
She appeared on “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars,” with her husband Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson. Mama June discovered Thompson had several online dating profiles.
Mama June has struggled with her weight most of her life.
She had four C-sections from the birth of all of her daughters. She admitted her scars were so thick doctors cut so deep they made slight cuts on Honey Boo Boo’s forehead at birth.
The family lived in a small house in McIntyre, Georgia where they were close to active railroad tracks.
Mama June purchased a new home in Georgia but in another town.
In March 2016, Mama June collapsed in her home.
She passed out while walking down the stairs. One of her daughters took her to the hospital. The reality TV star has been working hard since last year to lose weight.
On May 2015, Mama June revealed she had lost 45 pounds.
The mother of four said last year she had not had any surgical intervention. But by this year she had lost so much weight doctors feared she had gone too far.
Mama June has been posing happily on her Twitter profile showing up her new body.
This March doctors performed a gastric sleeve surgery where the stomach is reduced around 15% from its original size.
The 36-year-old says she is also walking three miles a day around her neighbourhood.
She does have extra skin from the weight loss but Mama June is planning to get that removed. She is appearing on another reality TV show “Botched,” to share her experience with her fans.
Despite all the success she has had with the reality TV shows and special appearances, Mama June swears not much has changed.
She admits she still shops using coupons and when she finds a good deal she gets a high from it.
